contest with only one outcome.

Confidence Isn’t the Absence of Insecurity

People sometimes talk about body confidence as though confident people wake up every morning delighted with every centimeter of themselves.

That has never been my experience.

I have insecurities.

Some days I dislike accept more easily than others.

Confidence, for me, is not believing that I look perfect.

It is refusing to make Becomes Invisible

There is nothing wrong with dressing modestly at sixty.

There is nothing wrong with preferring a one-piece swimsuit, covering up at the beach or deciding never to post a photograph online.

The point is choice.

A woman should not be forced into visibility in the name of confidence.

But neither should she be pushed into hiding because someone has decided her age makes her body inappropriate.

Older women are often given contradictory instructions.

Age naturally, but don’t look old.

Take care of yourself, but don’t try too hard.

Be confident, but don’t seek attention.

Remain attractive, but become less visible.

No one can satisfy all those rules.

Perhaps we should stop trying.

What I Actually Wanted My Daughter to Learn

I never wanted to humiliate offered younger women should not disappear when those women became older.

Every young woman who is encouraged to love her body is, if she is fortunate, going to inhabit an aging body someday.

The two conversations cannot be separated.

If we teach girls that their worth is greater than their appearance but later teach older women to hide because their appearance has changed, we have not solved the problem.

We have merely postponed it.

I am sixty.

One day, if I am fortunate, I will be seventy.

Then perhaps eighty.

My body will continue changing.

I hope my life continues changing too.

There will be more beaches.

More photographs.

More
