When he had helped Leo remove his shirt, he had noticed several old scars across the child\u2019s back and upper arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had known that Leo came from a difficult background, but the records available to us had not prepared Mark emotionally for seeing physical evidence of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Leo did not owe us immediate trust simply because we wanted to love him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We Asked for Help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The next morning, we contacted the professionals involved in Leo\u2019s placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We explained what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We did not try to diagnose him ourselves or invent a story about exactly what his scars meant. Physical marks and fearful behavior can have different explanations, and responsible adults should not turn assumptions into facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What mattered was that Leo had become frightened and that we needed guidance on responding appropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We were advised to slow everything down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Give choices whenever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Explain what was going to happen before touching him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Avoid forcing physical affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Create predictable routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark also admitted something difficult:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, our home became less focused on what might have happened before Leo arrived and more focused on who he was becoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His past mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it was not his entire identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark Had to Forgive Himself Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Months later, my husband admitted that he still thought about the sentence he had shouted in the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hated himself for saying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before adoption, I thought we were waiting for a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I eventually realized that Leo had also been waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was waiting to discover whether we stayed when things became difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whether spilled milk caused anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether this bedroom was temporary like other places had been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whether the people calling themselves his family would still be there tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those questions could not be answered with words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only time could answer them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our Family Was Never \u201cComplete\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
I used to say that adopting Leo completed our family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I do not say that anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Families are not puzzles with one missing piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are relationships built repeatedly through choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The night Mark ran from the bathroom, I thought our family might collapse before it had truly begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, that frightening moment forced us to abandon the fantasy that love automatically makes people prepared for everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had to ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had to become more patient than we thought we were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And we had to understand that Leo\u2019s trust belonged to him. We could not demand it simply because paperwork said we were his parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Years later, I sometimes think about that first evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark saw the scars and believed they represented a problem he was not capable of handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He eventually understood something very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The scars were not a reason to send Leo away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were a reminder that before asking a frightened child to trust us, we had to become the kind of adults who proved, day after day, that we were worthy of that trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
