But compassion and observation are not mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But concealment systems have weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more complicated the disguise becomes, the more unusual behavior is required to maintain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margaret had to remember which tomatoes were special. She had to keep them separate. She had to prevent them from being damaged or accidentally sold to ordinary customers. Most importantly, she had to stop anyone from examining them closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal networks have long relied on intermediaries who appear unlikely to attract attention. Some participants understand exactly what they are doing. Others are manipulated with promises of easy money or incomplete explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction can only be established through evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators would need to examine communications, financial transactions, surveillance footage and any connection between Margaret and the person she described. They would also need laboratory confirmation of whatever had been hidden inside the tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until those facts were established, dramatic conclusions would be premature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the officers knew with certainty was much simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had arrived expecting to deal with an illegal vegetable stall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had nearly allowed the seller to leave with a warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then one officer noticed that the woman was more concerned about protecting several tomatoes than protecting herself from a fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the detail that changes an entire investigation is not hidden in a locked room or behind an elaborate secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
